A miter saw, or miter saw, is a saw used to make precise cross and miter cuts in a workpiece by positioning a mounted blade onto a plate. The earliest forms of miter saws consisted of a back saw in a miter box, but in modern implementations it consists of a powered circular saw that can be positioned at various angles and lowered to rest against a barrier called a fence board.
The electric miter saw can also cut bevels into the workpiece by adjusting the vertical tilt axis on the upper part of the machine, while the table is placed horizontally. Miter saws whose shafts can be tilted in one direction are called single compound miter saws. If the shaft can be tilted left and right, then it is called a double bevel compound miter saw. Some come with a slide rail system or have a pivot arm to cut wider workpieces when they are flat on the saw table and flush with the fence. This is known as a sliding compound miter saw.
